Where to Sleep: Lisbon Hostels

A little history about hostels…

Before going into the lisbon hostels, here is a litle of history: Staying in hostels is a great way to explore historical sites and cities. German schoolteacher Richard Schirrmann, the father of modern hostelling, used to take his students on educational field trips to the countryside – an opportunity for learning experience and fresh air away from the industrial city where they lived. The group often sought refuge at farms or schoolhouses. School buildings made ideal overnight accommodations because they weren’t in use during the summer. By moving the desks aside and laying down their bedding, the group quickly turned the schoolrooms into makeshift dorms. The idea for modern hostels was born. Schirrmann opened the first hostel in a castle in Altena, Germany in 1912.The castle is still a hostel today. Hostels haven’t changed much in their hundred-plus year history. They remain an empowering, affordable means of youth travel.

Hostels in Lisbon

Lisbon has the four best hostels in the world. And the first is Yes! located at Rua São de Julião, in the heart of the Lisbon downtown.
For travelers from Hostelworld, mega international portal for economic accommodation, there is no doubt: the winner of the Hoscar for the best hostel in the world is Yes!
The three hostels that follow in the top of the “best hostels worldwide “, all in Lisbon, are Home (2nd), Travellers (3rd) and Living Lounge (4th). All these hostels have in common the fact that they are all located in the Lisbon downtown.
At the gala award held in Dublin, in 2013, more distinctions came to Portugal, which in recent years has won other victories in the category of best medium size hostels (51-100 beds), by Home, followed by Travellers and the Living Lounge. In small hostels (50 beds), Lisboa Central reached the 8th place.
In the category of large hostels (101-250 beds), another victory for Yes!, which in 2012 had also won this category – and which was also awarded the distinction of best hostel in Portugal.
Accommodation in hostels costs per night and person in general, less than 20 €. In the case of the four winning Portuguese hostels one can sleep from 12 € in a dorm at Yes! up to 30 € in a private room of the Living Lounge.
